I’ve had some pretty great adventures this summer – a trip home with Lake Tahoe time, a few weeks Out East and my first trip to the Poconos – but by the time Labor Day rolled around, it had been a bit since I skipped town. So when my LDW weekend was wide open, I decided it might be time to check out a bucket list spot: Greenport! Greenport is located on the North Fork of Long Island and I’ve always wanted to do a weekend out there exploring the towns and wineries. When I started planning, my original idea was to stay a night or two but I quickly found hotel prices were insane and availability was few and far between (if you want to stay for the weekend, book well ahead especially for a holiday weekend!). Car rentals were also looking a bit expensive so I pivoted to the possibility of taking the train. The Greenport train station is easily walkable to the main part of town and there was an 8 AM train out and a 9 PM train back. It was just under 3 hours each way which is just a little longer than driving but I decided to go for it! Here’s a breakdown of how I spent my day as well as suggestions if you want to do a full weekend!
11:20 AM – arrive in Greenport and head straight to Lucharito’s for lunch. They had a limited menu and only outdoor seating because of COVID but their BBQ pork burrito did not disappoint.
12 – 1:30 PM – check out the shops on the main streets (Front Street and Main Street). My favorites out of all the ones I popped into were: The Weathered Barn, LIDO, One Love Beach, Sea Bags, and The Times Vintage. I could have spent hours at Times Vintage so will definitely factor that in on my next trip out!
1:30 PM – head back to Kates Cheese Co. to pick up some bevs and snacks for the beach. Then I headed to 67 Steps Beach for a few hours. It’s about a 25 minute walk from the main part of Greenport but there’s a sidewalk the entire main street so it was easily walkable! You can also Uber or Lyft but just note getting back had a bit of a wait for a car so I decided to walk back to town as well.
2 PM – 5:30 PM – enjoy some time by the water! Take note, 67Steps beach is not sandy at all but rather little pebbles. Which isn’t a huge deal if you have a thick towel and the right shoes but of course I had neither of those (a thin Turkish towel and gladiator sandals that seemed to trap ALL the rocks) so just something to take note of! Here is a link to other beaches in the area and there’s also the option of Sunset Beach (you have to take the 10 minute ferry to Shelter Island and then Uber from there).
6 – 7 PM: to kill time before dinner, I wandered around the waterfront and grabbed a beer at Claudio’s beer garden.
7 – 8 PM: dinner at Noah’s! I had the crab deviled eggs and the lobster roll (with a side of rose of course!)
8 – 9 PM: I grabbed some ice cream from Greenport Creamery before getting on the train to go home!
Make it a Weekend Trip!
For those of you wanting to spend a whole weekend out on the North Fork, I’ve tapped my friend Simone who is a NoFo expert to get a list of her favorite spots!
EAT/SHOP: Brix & Rye for cocktails and their pizza, American Beech’s restaurant, the Haylard at the Soundview Hotel, Hampton Chocolate Company (splurge on the popcorn!), and The Times Vintage. Hit up Harbe’s which is a farm stand on the way out of the North Fork for their salty & sweet popcorn.
Wineries: Simone suggested Kontokosta Winery (take the short walk toward the water for a great view of the Sound!).
Hotels: The Menhaden – located right in town and super chic and the Soundview Hotel – has a great restaurant (Haylard) and a beautiful deck that hangs over the water! Makes for a great sunset view and they have yoga classes on the deck!

I was also eyeing the Lin Beachouse and American Beech for accommodations. Wineries I’ve read that are great are Mattabella’s, Bedell, Sparkling Point, Osprey’s Dominion, Lieb Cellars, and Martha Clara.
Other Greenport restaurants on my radar include Frisky Oyster, Little Creek Oysters, Bruce & Son, Industry Standard, Agave Grill & Cantina and Barba Bianca (it’s a summer pop up restaurant so you’ll definitely want to scope out reservations early! And because of COVID, this year they actually had Fortin’s Tavern as a pop up instead).
Have you been to Greenport? Am I missing anything? Don’t hesitate to drop it in the comments below!
